In the end, it was really, really, very sad. Brad Childress isn’t a bad guy. He believes in a strong work and moral ethic and brought this with him to Minnesota. What he struggles with, is interaction with others. He’s abrasive, stubborn and doesn’t adapt quickly to situations. He is also a little too sensitive to criticism. Which is why Randy Moss is no longer a Viking, and why in part, Childress is on his way out the door.
This was going to happen sooner or later. Every coach knows that he is hired to be fired at some point in the future. This season, expectations were high. This was going to be the year the team finally got off the hook.
But the team came out of the gates less like a charging bull elephant and more like a box of twinkies ! The Vikings found new and more exciting ways to lose each week. It seemed as though we were a late Favre comeback from victory every week. But as those losses began to pile up, the excuses began to mount, and the feeling of hope gave way to finger pointing and bickering.
First there was the noble outbursts of the famed “Unknown Players” bashing Childress in the media last week. Then, as I watched the Chicago Bears game, it became clear around the mid way point of the second quarter, that the team had quit.
That was the hardest part to take !
Watching Percy Harvin go all out, while all around him, others stopped caring. Then during the Packers game, it was painful watching Chris Cook with the deer in the headlights look on his face while Ray Edwards undressed him on National TV.
Then, as if that wasn’t enough, we had to endure Brett Favre getting testy with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell because Bevell had the nerve to do his job !
It was time for a change ! It was like euthanizing a sick pet. It was both merciful, and sad at the same time. Brad Childress loved his job. He loved the Vikings and for what its worth, he instilled a level of professionalism that was lacking under Mike Tice. There were no Loveboat scandals and lets keep in mind the ugly Brett Favre texting fiasco happened in NY. But……….it was time for a change.
So for now, Leslie Frasier is the new sheriff in town. He will be given every chance to remove the “Interim” label between now and January. In the mean time the rumors of Bill Parcells, Bill Cower and John Gruden will play tricks with our psyches until a permanent moniker is given.
