Packers deal with injuries: It’s pretty clear that right tackle Mark Tauscher won’t play Sunday when the Packers face Washington. It’s less clear how long he’ll be out. Tauscher sprained his shoulder blocking. The Packers are a bruised and battered team, but the one position at which they appear prepared to handle injuries is offensive tackle. OT Bulaga played all summer at left guard and left tackle and since the start of the regular season has been adding right tackle to his practice duties.
Injuries crisis: While inside linebacker Barnett awaits a second opinion on his injured wrist in hopes of avoiding season-ending surgery, the Packers will also be without veteran right tackle Tauscher when they face Redskins Sunday. Tauscher won’t play against the Redskins but is hoping to try to play against Miami on Oct. 17. He’ll may be out until the team’s Nov. 14 bye if the shoulder injury is deemed serious enough. OT Bulaga would start at right tackle in place of Tauscher. Clifton practiced in full on Thursday and appears set to play against the Redskins. If both Tauscher and Clifton were unable to play, T.J. Lang would start at right tackle and Bulaga would start at left tackle. Meanwhile, Barnett was set to see a specialist on Friday for a second opinion on his injured wrist. Barnett is trying to put off surgery until after the season allowing him to keep playing. Packers will also be without inside linebacker Chillar against the Redskins. Chillar will miss his second straight game with a shoulder injury suffered Sept. 27 at Chicago but McCarthy said earlier this week that his injury is not season-ending. The team promoted practice-squad inside linebacker Simpkins to take Burnett’s spot on the 53-man roster. LBs Hawk and Bishop are set to start against the Redskins.
Notebook: Inside linebackers Nick Barnett and Brandon Chillar need second opinions on their injuries and could be out for an extended period. Injury report--12 players are on the initial injury list, with Barnett, Chillar, offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, safety Nick Collins, and cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Sam Shields not participating. Clifton, Collins and Woodson got the day off to rest. Out: S Morgan Burnett (knee). Did not participate: Barnett (wrist), Chillar (shoulder), Clifton (knee), Collins (knee), FB Quinn Johnson (glute), Shields (calf), Tauscher (shoulder), Woodson (toe). Full participation: DE Cullen Jenkins (hand), S Derrick Martin (ankle), S Charlie Peprah (quad).
LB Maurice Simpkins: He is a full-fledged member of the Packers. The indoor football leaguer turned computer programmer turned NFL hopeful got the call Thursday. With inside linebackers Nick Barnett (wrist) and Brandon Chillar (shoulder) both sidelined by significant injuries, the team promoted Simpkins from the practice squad giving him the spot on the 53-man roster previously occupied by safety Morgan Burnett, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last week against Detroit.
