On Wednesday, half of the Cardinals met to discuss the very poor performance on display last Sunday against Atlanta. The player-called, defense only meeting was organized by veteran Joey Porter. Aside from this obvious example of Porter’s off-field contributions, the former Steeler and Dolphin has produced on the field with six tackles and a forced fumble so far, but no sacks yet.
Obviously, unless you play defense for the Cardinals it’s impossible to know what the complete agenda and talking points were, but Darren Urban believes the general point of emphasis was that games like the one against the Falcons can’t happen anymore.
Ken Whisenhunt reflected on the positive effect that players only meetings can have. “I have been around a number of teams that [have called players only meetings],” Whisenhunt said. “If you have the right people doing it and get the right things out of it, it’s a good thing.”
Darren Urban pointed out that Whisenhunt recalled a year he was playing for the Redskins when they had players’ only meetings every Saturday night. “It became kind of like a ritual for us,” he said. “Hopefully we will see good results from (this one) Sunday.”
