Raheem Morris maintains that part of the reason for Derrick Ward’s drop in production in 2009 was due to a lack of holes. He has, at least in part, a different explanation for his spotty cameos this preseason.
“When you get a bit older in this league, especially as a running back, you have to realize that you need to come into camp at a lighter weight, not heavier. I still have a lot of confidence in Derrick Ward that he’ll be ready and in shape to help us this season.” said Raheem Morris.
Ward seemed to disagree. “Ask my teammates – I’m not huffing or puffing, I’m not asking to be taken out of games,” he said. “My weight is good and I’m ready to go. If the first game of the season was this Sunday, I’d be ready.”
These squibbles, with the media being the forum, are really overblown by media types that don’t want to go into the X’s and O’s and stories about factors that will directly affect the outcome of a game. Whether it’s Sabby or Ward, they have been given opportunities. The best players will play.
