Some analysts, particularly the Fantasy Football prognosticators, are predicting Derrick Mason’s numbers will drop off this coming season. In a recent column by Michael Fabiano, Fantasy Editor, NFL.com, he discusses ‘players fantasy owners should avoid,’ one of those being receiver Derrick Mason. Fabiano is complimentary of Mason, but states, “this is the time when his numbers will start to decline,” with the additions of Anquan Boldin and Donte Stallworth in the mix.
It will be interesting to see who becomes Flacco’s number one receiver and for fans this is news that can be insightful as we try to get a feel of how the offense will evolve with all the new editions. With the offensive new weaponry, you would assume Mason’s numbers might drop off. On the other hand, if Anquan Boldin draws more double coverage, then Mason may have more opportunities for production.
Michael Fabiano, Fantasy Editor, NFL.com says:
“Mason has been one of the more underrated wide-outs in fantasy football over the last few years, putting up 70-plus catches and 1,000-plus yards in all but one season with the Ravens. But this is the time when his numbers will start to decline. Aside from the fact that he’s 36, Mason will also see a drop in targets with Anquan Boldinand Donte Stallworth in the mix. He’s now no more than a No. 4 fantasy option.” http://www.nfl.com/fantasy/story
Mason addresses his production in a recent article in Sporting News:
Here’s a portion of the Q & A:
Q: How does having Boldin and Stallworth affect your role in the offense?
A (Mason): I don’t think it will change that much. I’ll still be running a lot of the same routes. The one thing that’ll be different is that with Quan we have someone who can draw that double-team attention. We have so many weapons who can beat single coverage. So maybe I go from seeing 10 balls a game to making the most of the seven or eight I do get.” http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/article/

Derrick Mason, WR, Ravens. Bye: 8.
Projected 2010 Fantasy Stats: 61 catches. 840 yards. 5 total TDs.
“Derrick Mason has amazingly topped 1,000 receiving yards in all but one season dating back to 2001. He has been the epitome of consistency. Unfortunately, this looks like the year that Mason will fall off. I’m not expecting a huge decline, but he’s no longer the No. 1 wideout on the team. He also turned 36 in January. http://walterfootball.com/fantasy2010widereceivers_3.php
CBSsports.com, Fantasy News
“With the arrival of Boldin and Stallworth, Mason’s chances of posting his ninth 1,000-yard campaign in 10 seasons take a big hit. We expect to see him morph into Flacco’s possession receiver while Stallworth stretches the field deep and Boldin falls somewhere in between. Because Mason isn’t expected to have a solid year statistically, Fantasy owners shouldn’t consider him anything more than a safe No. 3 WR worth a middle- to late-round pick. http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/players/
