Stover a Tough Shoe to Fill for the Ravens

Tough Shoe To Fill, Like Replacing Ripken

The Matt Stover era might be officially over as the team signed Shayne Graham, former Cincinnati Bengals to compete with Billy Cundiff for the starting kicking position.

For Baltimore fans they will be skeptical no matter who the team signs; following Matt Stover, you have to be near perfect.  Replacing Matt Stover, we’ll that’s like replacing Cal Ripken or Brooks Robinson or Ray Lewis when he retires.  Shayne Graham is a fine kicker and 4th most accurate in the NFL, yet he is coming off a shaky playoff game missing two kicks against the NY Jets.  The fact is Matt Stover set high standards, he was clutch and it will be hard for any kicker to live up to those standards.

The Kickers Might Pile Up

So far the team has gone through one kicker (Steven Hauschka) since the Stover era.  Depending on who wins the battle in training camp, there may be another name added to the list of kickers following Stover.  It is hoped that this list will be real short, the team needs a solid kicker.

Retire As A Raven

Whatever the future might hold for Matt Stover, it would be any fan’s hope that Stover would retire as a Raven.   Stover belongs in the Ravens Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame, he has numbers to back that up. He also produced those numbers in Baltimore along with being on the Super Bowl team. Stover is a Raven and should retire as a Raven.
