Some thoughts, and tidbits of information after this past weekend’s Mini-camp.
- Michael Oher to be a celebrity volunteer on ABC’s Extreme Makeover.
Oher and his adoptive family, the Tuohys, will be the celebrity volunteers for the build on the season finale of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The episode will air on May 16 at 8 p.m. Oher and his parents are volunteering to rebuild the home of a father and coach who is dealing with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Oher is someone who knows firsthand what it’s like to be in need. It’s great to see him being able to give back and help others.
- Section of North Avenue to be renamed “Ray Lewis Way”.
The North Avenue corridor, at the corner of Broadway, is home to the DIAKON Center, where Lewis and his charitable foundation host an annual Thanksgiving distribution for nearly 1,000 Baltimore families in need.
I’m sure that in national circles this will be the root of several jokes. But even though Lewis has had his share of national attention with his double murder case he has done many things for the city of Baltimore. I think that the renaming of the street will only be the first of several commendations that he’ll receive from the city in the future. Congratulations Ray.
- Ravens serve as waiters for charity.
Matt Birk’s HIKE Foundation, which provides educational programs and resources to at-risk children in Maryland held a charity dinner last Monday at Morton’s Steakhouse. Among six of the Ravens were Joe Flacco, Michael Oher and Ben Grubbs.
When the Ravens signed Birk they were getting not only a quality Pro Bowl player but a quality individual as well. The event was sold out.
