Debate continues around the Eagles first draft pick

Maurkice Pouncey

Even with the Eagles schedule being released yesterday, the majority of the talk you hear about the team right now is draft related. Although the offseason was filled with cries of defense, defense, defense, there are still debates on whether or not that is going to be where the Eagles will spend their first pick (wherever that may be).

Although I am convinced the Eagles will use their first selection on a defensive back, there are many who believe the Eagles need to find a top-notch interior lineman. The only reason this is even being discussed is due to the injury that Jamaal Jackson sustained towards the end of the season last year. It’s unlikely that he’ll be ready for the season opener, so the big question is who will fill that spot. Right now, Nick Cole is the starter but there will definitely be a competition at Training Camp this year. Mike McGlynn is the primary threat to overtake Cole while others will compete for the spot as well.

There is only one clear cut first round center in this class and that’s Maurkice Pouncey out of Florida. He’s more of a mid to late first rounder so the Eagles might have a crack at him if they were to stay with the 24th overall selection. However, if they trade up for someone else and don’t pick again until 37th I don’t think he’ll be around anymore. According to PFT’s list of players who visited the Eagles, Pouncey did not visit. This list is “unofficial” but I’m not sure how his visit would go unheard.

Just because he may not have visited doesn’t mean the Eagles aren’t interested. Center is definitely a big need for them and I’m sure they will draft one. However, center’s are not typically drafted high so I think they could pick up a fairly solid player in the second or third round.

Do you think the Eagles should try to get Maurkice Pouncey?

Targeting a defensive back is a higher need for the Eagles and a sexier pick as well. Having Bradley back will help bring leadership back on defense, but the backfield could use a coverage back to keep the passing attacks at the Beast in check.
I’ve seen a mock draft where the Eagles trade up to get a DB like Joe Haden, and then trade back into the first round later for either a Pouncey or Earl Thomas if they start to slip.
Also, if they can hold onto their position in the first round and snag a Kyle Wilson or Kareem Jackson, they could possible nab a DE at 37 and look for Taylor Mays, who seems to be slipping late and might end up being available as late as the Eagles late 2nd round pick… and although he’s scouted as a project player who needs work, he’d be a value to develop that late in the second round.
