Report has the Lions with interest in guard Rob Sims

Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reports that:

The Detroit Lions are strongly considering making a trade with the Seattle Seahawks for restricted free-agent guard Rob Sims, according to a league source.

Once the Lions expressed interest in restricted free agent Anthony Hargrove, I was a little surprised that they hadn’t inquired about Rob Sims.  Sims is one of the best young guards in the game and he is tendered at a 4th round pick.

The deadline for signing a restricted free agent to an offer sheet is April 15th, and the Lions’ decisions between now and then will provide great insight into their designs for the 2nd pick in the draft.  If the Lions sign Hargrove and surrender a third round pick, they would most likely not draft Suh or McCoy with the 2nd pick.  If they sign Sims and cough up a 4th rounder, they almost certainly won’t draft a left tackle like Russell Okung or Trent Williams.  Don’t rule out the possibility that the Lions are expressing interest in either player as a smokescreen.  Mayhew loves keeping people guessing what their plans are, what better way than this?

I believe Coach Schwartz is dead serious about both Hargrove and Sims. I think they give up the 2nd pick of the 5th rd and swap 4’s with Seattle for G Sims. And they will wait to see if they can trade out of their #2 1st rounder to make the deal for Hargrove whom they’ll play at DE and move inside on 3rd down. Mr Ford has NO desire to pay Kong Suh at #2. Now the bluffing starts to sucker someone into trading up!

I agree JDtroit. I think we need both of these players…we know what we are getting with them and players in the 4th and 3rd are always a major risk. Get both of these guys, trade out of that #2 overall pick, take those extra picks and make educated decisions…its as simple as that and the Staff finally gets it!!! Go DETROIT!!!

  3. Casey and JD-

I agree that the Lions could very well be interested in Sims, getting a starting LG for a fourth rounder is a good deal. I think that Hargrove is not worth a third rounder though. Hargrove is below average at DE and slightly above average at DT. He’s a slightly more talented Cory Redding, and in a draft that has more quality on the defensive line than I can remember, it would be a waste to use a 3rd rounder on a player like Hargrove. Just ask yourself this, if Hargrove is such a great player, why did the Saints only tender him at the 3rd round level? If he was a really important part of their plans, he would have been tendered at a much higher level. The Saints value a 3rd rounder more than they value Hargrove, which is why I don’t think he’s worth it.
