A Somewhat Quiet Week in Bear Country

There is not a lot of activity going on in Bears Nation this week.  Aside from the devastating news of the passing of Gaines Adams, and the Bears interviewing Mike DeBord for the Tight Ends coaching position, not much else is happening.

That is what is disturbing.  There is no long line of candidates for either of the coordinator positions that are open.  Several candidates have turned down the Bears.  And the Bears are not helping themselves.

  1. They kept Lovie Smith.  With no change at the head coaching position and only two years left on his contract.  There is no job security for the underlings.  Why move yourself and your family to Chicago, only to have to up and move again in 12-24 months if and when the Bears fail?
  2. The Bears don’t want someone who will think for themselves.  The Bears are only interested in candidates that are going to coach the systems that they have in place.  You must be all for the cover-who defense and/or must be dedicated to running the ball up the middle and constraining Jay Cutler to sit in the pocket.
  3. Candidates will more than likely have no say in the staff they have to coordinate.  The Bears have already hired one position coach and have interviewed another this past week.  By the time the Bears have scraped the bottom of the last barrel the coaching staff will be complete before we have any coordinators.
  4. There is little to no new talent to look forward to.  The Bears have no first or second round draft picks this year.  Any high draft picks will have to come in 2011 which may or may not happen if Lovie gets fired after this year.  If Lovie survives another year, high draft picks from 2011 won’t help a new coach anyway, because the bears historically take their high draft picks and incubate them on the sidelines, meaning they won’t be ready until after Lovie’s final year.
  5. Beyond the next year or two – Jerry Angelo will probably still be there.  Jerry Angelo has shown a propensity to draft horribly, trade stupidly and stay committed to losing systems, players and coaches.

It’s no wonder that the Bears have little activity going on.  For better or for worse, the Bears need to make a splash NOW!  Hire Mike “Marshmellow” Martz as offensive coordinator and let him do his thing/damage. Promote Rod “Marinara Sauce” as defensive coordinator.  Lets get a staff in place, an off-season program in place and get moving forward.  The sooner we do the sooner we win or get rid of Lovie “Spankme” Smith
