Ted Ginn Vs Chris Johnson: The Race That Never Was

Ted Ginn. AFC Special Teams Player Of The Week back in the month of November. Part of the reason Ginn received this award was his blazing speed.

Chris Johnson. Self-proclaimed fastest man in the NFL. He made the Pro-Bowl last year in part because he is so fast.

You look at these two names, and wonder how they are even in the same conversation. Johnson is brash and cocky, while Ginn is more soft-spoken, and quiet. Johnson embraces the attention, Ginn shys away from it.

So again, we pose the question. How in the world are these two players linked besides their teams playing each other this week?

It seems that Ginn and Johnson were both at a pool party in the offseason. In fact, this party was one of those VIP parties that we all wish we would be a part of.

Chad OchoCinco was there. Joey Porter, and Vince Young were there. Can you imagine who else was present at this party?

Johnson and Ginn were about to be the main event at this party too, you know, provide some entertainment.

We all know Johnson and Ginn are both blazing fast. So have any of you ever thought of who would win in a race? Well neither Ginn nor Johnson thought of this first, but in fact some of Ginn’s teammates thought that Ginn would be the faster of the two.

We discussed Johnson’s cockiness above, so who is he to turn down a challenge. The race was set in stone. Johnson’s 4.24 40 yard dash time, and Ginn’s 4.37 time coming off of a ankle injury.

“It was real,” Johnson said Wednesday during a conference call with South Florida reporters. “We were at a pool party and [Ginn] was talking. I said, ‘Let’s go.’ We were going to race down Ocean Drive there in Miami.”

So if the race was just about ready to happen what came up to prevent it?

“[Ginn] never showed up,” Johnson said.

That is the Ted Ginn we all know and love, afraid of confrontation. I’m not saying he is a coward, you have to be somewhat tough to even practice with the NFL players. The bottomline is that this is what needs to change about Ginn. Someone or something needs to light a fire under this kid to give him some sort of excitement to want to carry himself with a sort of swagger.

Look at all of the playmakers in the league. They all have some type of confidence about them that makes them the player that they truly are.

DeSean Jackson is the player he is because of his speed and mostly because of his cockiness. That is something that Ginn lacks, and even though he has the speed, lienbacker Channing Crowder once said on his radio show that Ginn is afraid of contact.

So how can we the fans expect Ginn to go over the middle and make a key catch in the game?

Sure, he can make a catch near the sidelines, heck, we all know Ginn knows how to work a sideline better than anyone else in the league, but the fans want Ginn to show us something, and show us the courage to make a clutch catch over the middle. We all know the potential that Ginn has, but the bottomline is that he does not have the mental toughness nor the confidence to go over the middle, and go for the ball.

Ginn has the talent, he just needs to get some confidence in himself as a football player.

“The best man may win,” Ginn said. ” That’s all up to the man upstairs. I know he’s pretty fast. And just as well I’m fast. And it’s just [up to] us to go out and run one day. But until that day happens, I don’t think this week is the week to g into details about it.”

So it sounds to me like Ginn does have some confidence in himself somewhere, but it just does not transfer over to football.

Ginn mentions that this week is not the time for a race. Well what if Ginn would win. That would be the type of swagger that Ginn needs to finally light the fire under his feet again. We all saw what good ol’ Teddy can do when he gets that confidence in him. After all, it only took one kickoff return for a touchdown for Ginn to inspire himself for the rest of the game.

Now if only we could get Ginn to think like this all of the time!

So how about that race Chris?

Sometimes when you know you are the fastest (Ginn) you have nothing to prove…..let Chris Johnson run his mouth and act cocky.

  2. Percy says:

I can believe all these dumb people who don’t know about speed.A 4.24 forty yard dash is self explanatory.Chris Johnson is the fastest player in the league period.Desean Jackson is faster than Ginn and so is Deven Hester.I know football.Chris Johnson could possibly run a 4.19.He didn’t lean at the finish line which cuts tenths of a second off your time..I watched all of Ted Ginns highlights & he doesn’t have the stride length times stride frequency that chris has.Numbers don’t lie and Chris Johnson 4.24 time is the fastest combine time ever.He is in fact the best running back over Adrian Peterson. You are judged based on your production and Chris is the MVP of the league regardless of what the voters think because of the so called QB’s.Honestly no other football player woule even be within 5 yards of CJ in a 100m race.Numbers don’t lie and Chris Johnson is the Usain Bolt of football.Other players like Hester are the Tyson Gays of football.Chris is the best in the league and yall know it

    • Cliff says:

Ted ginn jr was still recovering from an injury at the combine hence the slower time plus if your talking about which one is faster than they should race a 100 instead of a forty, Chris Johnson’s 100 time drops of dramatically, both trending Holliday and Ted ginn have faster 100 times , if your asking which player has the. Est acceleration the. You go off 40 times but until there is an official timing when Ted ginn isn’t hurt we won’t know who will win in the 40

  3. P Diddy says:

I agree wit Percy on every occasion. If others don’t think Chris Johnson is the fastest in the NFL which only a few don’t then its because they don’t like they blistering speed over a power runner such as AP.Well you don’t start at runningback over lendell white or any runningback either unless you have power.Chris Johnson is unanimously faster than Ted Ginn and it wouldn’t be close. Its like Usain Bolt vs Osafa Powell not Tyson Gay because Ginn isn’t even the 2nd fastest player in the NFL.Folks Chris Johnson is the fastest and I would put my life on the line for it because I know facts theories and stats.Chris Johnson came from a small school

  5. Brian Witherspoon can run the fastest 40 in the NFL

  6. NFL draft says:

Mangini comes from the Bill Belichick/Bill Parcells tree, which is the inverse as Walsh’s tree in many ways. Mangini also has been a controversial figure in Cleveland during his one year there, making it all the more likely that a new president might want to start from scratch with the coaching staff.

It isn’t unprecedented for a team to part with a coach after only one season, with the Miami Dolphins, for instance, recently making a change from Cam Cameron after one season (2007) to Tony Sparano.

  7. Eric Bronstein says:

When talking about who would win I think it would depend on the race. I think in 40 yards Chris Johnson would win but in 100 meters Ted Ginn without a doubt. Johnson is fast and explosive but he does not maintain his top end speed like ted ginn does. Watch the kickoff return in the national championship game. Ginn got into the open and just pulled away from all american saftey reggie nelson. Even if nelson was not held (which he was) there is still no way he would have caught ginn. Chris johnson takes too many strides, therefore he tires quicker after a certain distance. Ginn has the stamina and “track speed” to beat chris johnson. All in all i say ted ginn is faster

  8. The Truth says:

Agree with Eric 100% Chris Johnson is quicker and more explosive, but Ted Ginn Jr. has massive amounts of top end speed that Chris Johnson just cant match. If you put these 2 on the track, there is no question that Teddy G is going to win that race. To put Ted’s TRACK speed into perspective, as an 18 year old senior in highschool Ted ran a 13.26 in the 110m Hurdles, a time that would have landed him a 5th place finish in the 2008 Olympics at Beijing (imagine what he could of ran with 4 years of olympic training). In the end, the further the race goes, the less chances CJ has of winning.

  9. Dominique Wilson says:

Chris Johnson would smoke ted ginn any day. not saying that teddy isnt fast but come on….cj’s speed makes the nfl look like college football…cj takes angles away like taking candy from a baby! and i dont know about track speed, but this is football, and on the field Chris Johnson is definitely the faster player hands down!

  10. lamar says:

chris johnson is tha fastest n best back n the league rite now.. Adrian peterson is really the greatest but this year chris johnson just proves more…they both r great but n a foot race chris johnson wins…

  11. DvsBen says:

for the morons betting their lives on chris johnson beating Ted Ginn in a race know this..Teddys 40 time before his injury in the title game was a 4.14 in the 40..that’s sick he then ran a 4.38 on a bad ankle..and if there was a race Ginn would win…esp in 100 mtrs..with that said Chris Johnson is a better player in the NFL than Ginn but we’re talking about a race

  12. ben says:

Ha let’s face it. Chris Johnson is by far a better football player but Ted Ginn’s best 40 time is a tenth better than CJ’s and as said earlier he has the capacity to medal in the olympics something CJ could only dream of doing.
