Perhaps it isn’t so much if but when former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis finds his way within the NFL. The Weis Sweepstakes began in earnest this weekend as a source close to Weis says that the former Fighting Irish head coach is interested in the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator position, as told to the Chicago Sun-Times.
But for the meantime, the position is for current Bears OC Ron Turner to lose. Should the Bears miss the playoffs, then all bets are off. Having Weis as the Bears’ OC would have some built-in advantages for the former Notre Dame head coach as he and his wife are involved in charity work in the South Bend, IN area, not to mention that their son is currently a junior at a local high school.
He would be an intriguing choice as it isn’t like Weis hasn’t been successful at the NFL level. Back in the day, he was an assistant to New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells; he would then go to the New York Jets and New England Patriots as an offensive coordinator. Whether that translates to success in Chicago is anyone’s guess in light of the current roster the Bears have in place.
