Williams Wanted Out – Now He’s the Cowboys Problem

Roy Williams is an amazing talent with the size, speed and skills to be an elite receiver in the NFL. So why did the Detroit Lions give him up to the Dallas Cowboys for a first and a third? Lions fans know, and now the fans of “America’s Team” are learning for themselves. The guy can’t catch.

Okay, maybe that’s too strong. Roy Williams can make freakish “oh my god I can’t believe he pulled that in!” catches from time to time. He is usually pretty reliable on stuff that hits him in stride or between the numbers. But ask any Lions fan and they will tell you how frustrating it was to watch Roy miss so darn many catchable balls.

The latest insult comes from a Fox Sports montage of Williams short-arming passes in the Cowboys-Redskins game last Sunday. Receivers have to fight the urge to protect their bodies from potentially vicious hits in order to fully extend to bring in a pass, and fighting that urge is something that Roy Williams has struggled with his entire career. In Detroit, it wasn’t unusual to hear fans grumbling about Williams’ tendency to get “alligator arms” when running routes over the middle. What is unusual is to hear him get called out by an opponent.

That’s exactly what happened this week, though, as Redskins safety LaRon Landry flat out called Roy Williams “scared” to take hits from Washington’s secondary. Much like the Lions this week, the Cowboys managed a come from behind victory. Roy Williams had exactly zero catches in that game. On the other hand, Brandon Pettigrew – the tight end Detroit selected with the first round pick they got in trade for Williams – had six catches for 72 yards and the game winning score.

Roy Williams always made it clear that he wanted to play in Texas. He got his wish. The question is whether Jerry Jones got his.
