Losing to the champion Steelers on the road is one thing – but losing at home to the Texans is quite another. But that is the reality that the Titans face today as they are now 0-2 after a stunning 34-31 setback to the rivals from Houston. They wasted a great day on offense in which they were able to amass 449 yards, and they also wasted a record setting day from Chris Johnson, who scored three times and had 197 yards on the ground.
Add in the fact that Johnson had 87 yards on 9 grabs, and that means the second-year back put up 284 yards with three TD’s. It’s a shame that it was all for not, as the Titans D was trounced by a Texans team that was held to zero points by their offense a week ago, as their only score in a 24-7 loss was a defensive score off a pick.
Matt Schaub put up his best game as a pro, throwing for 357 yards on 25-for-39 passing with four TD’s and no picks. Schaub had a fun day with top wide out Andre Johnson, who had 10 catches for 149 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard TD. The Texans top running back was Steve Slaton, who had just 34 yards, but they really didn’t need him.
The Titans made way too many mistakes. Kerry Collins, who threw for 216 yards, was sacked seven times, he threw a pick, and the team fumbled three times, losing one. They also had the ball for just 25:57 as compared to 34:03 to the Texans. Add 8 penalties for 64 yards, and it’s easy to see why the team is off to a poor start at 0-2.
The team has to regroup in a hurry, as next week they travel to New York to play a Jets team that is 2-0 after a shocking win over the Patriots on Sunday. Things can get real ugly if they start the year 0-3.
