San Diego Take Apart San Francisco in Preseason Finale 26-7

49ers Chargers Football
The San Diego Chargers wrapped up preseason competition with an impressive victory over the San Francisco 49ers 26-7. The Charger quarters, Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst completed 18-for-27 passes for 185 yards and a combined 113.3 quarterback rating. Philip Rivers took the night off.

The Chargers found success running the ball lead by their 4th round draft pick Gartrell Johnson who had a solid 4.3 yards per average while carrying the ball 20 times for 85 yards. Michael Bennett added 30 yards on 8 carries. Most experts feel that the final running back spot on the Chargers roster will go to either Johnson or Bennett.

Wide receiver Kassim Osgood only had one catch for the evening but it was a big one, just two minutes into the game, Osgood grabbed a pass from Volek and took it in for a touchdown. The other Charger TD came in the forth quarter when quarterback Charlie Whitehurst connected with tight end Kory Sperry.

Kicker Nate Kaeding , who provided the balance of the scoring, was perfect for the night. Kaeding was 4/4 with a long of 51 yards.

On the defensive side Antwan Applewhite was definitely the highlight of the game, Applewhite posted 1 sack, 4 tackles and hit the quarterback 2 times. Shaun Phillips also had a sack and the much improved Charger defense as a whole knocked down 5 passes by 49er quarterbacks.

Kevin Burnett has the only injury for the Chargers. Burnett suffered a stinger early in the game and did not return, but he was seen talking and smiling on the sidelines and it looks like he will be ready to go next week against the Raiders.
