11th Hour Finds Broncos Hurting At QB

To illustrate how difficult times are in the Mile-High city (Denver for those who are geographically challenged), I cannot remember a time in recent memory when their quarterbacking corps has been so thin.

Yet that is what the Broncos face as they go into Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals. How bad is it, you’re wondering? Starting QB Kyle Orton has a lacerated and dislocated index finger on his throwing hand and reserve Chris Simms is suffering from a high ankle sprain.

What that means is that 3rd-stringer Fresno State rookie Tom Brandstater will get the nod Thursday. Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels apparently isn’t rtoo worried as he has nothing but high praise for the rookie, stating:

“He’s a mature kid, and he’s really picked up on some of the things that sometimes take quarterbacks longer to do — run the huddle, get the formations lined up and that kind of stuff. He’s getting better every day, and that’s what we like to see out of our young guys.”

Although you wouldn’t know it from his most recent performance, Brandstater was not overwhelmed in his short time on the field as he went 8-for-12 for 110 yards what that means in the grand scheme of things is mere speculation at this point, but that performance alone should guarantee that 4th-string QB Tee Martin’s stay in Denver just got shorter.

So suffice it to say, for at least the short-term, it looks like there will be a QB carousel. That should change around Week 2 or 3 of the regular season.
