Mike Vick was on the field for all of six plays in the Eagles 33-32 preseason win over the Jaguars Thursday night, but make no mistake about it – all eyes were on the former first-round pick.
Vick, making his first on-field appearance since 2006, went 4-for-4 for 19 yards as he saw his first action of the preseason. He got a standing ovation from the crowd in Philly. “It’s been a long journey for me,” Vick said. “I just want to do it right this time around.”
The former Falcon had a variety of roles in the win – he played quarterback, ran the wildcat formation, even lined up at wide receiver and completed a pass right-handed. “When I was running out onto the field I was listening to see what the reaction was going to be,” Vick said. “I was very pleased. I really didn’t expect that reaction, but I was very thankful.”
Vick’s plays all came in the opening 18 minutes. Other than completing all four of his passes for 19 yards, he ran for 1 yard and lined up in the slot for one play. “I just want to help this football team win, whatever I have to do,” Vick said. “I just want to be able to make plays and say that I contributed. … I want to sit back and learn as much as I can and polish my skills as a quarterback.”
He’ll be allowed to play in the teams final preseason game before then it’s up to the league to see how long he has to sit. Some think he will be allowed to play right away, while it’s been noted that he could be forced to sit up to six games before being allowed back into the league.
