49’ers Coach Mike Singletary Picks Shaun Hill as the Teams Opening Day QB

Niners coach Mike Singletary was reported to be torn between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith as who to go with at starting QB, but that decision now has been made, as the coach has decided to go with Hill as his opening day started vs the Cardinals September 13th.

Singletary made the announcement before Monday afternoon’s practice at the team’s Santa Clara headquarters. The 29-year-old Hill went 5-3 over the Niners’ final eight games last season and was 2-0 as a fill-in starter in 2007. He has shown he can lead the team and, ultimately, win. Hill’s success down the stretch helped Singletary get the interim tag removed from his title heading into 2009.

Smith missed all of last season after reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Hill had a good end of the season throwing for 13 touchdowns and 8 picks while throwing for 2046 yards. For Smith, it could be the end of the road for the former first overall pick, who will start the year as the backup.
