Signs of Life: Browns Have a Pulse in Pounding of Lions 27-10

Lions Browns Football
Browns had an excellent 1st quarter. Cribbs took the opening KO 95 yards for a TD but the Browns were called for holding. DA was 6 for 9, we got our first offensive TD in ages on a Lewis 4 yard run, Wright had an interception, Dawson had 2 FG’s, and Cribbs had an 84 yard Punt Return for a TD. Defense had a lot of pressure on Detroit’s QB. The D stuffed the run while the def backfield stopped any long passes or TD’s.

Quinn started the 2nd quarter. He wasn’t flashy and was only 3 for 5 but no ints. Things got real boring during the 2nd and 3rd quarter. They brought DA back in during the 2nd and he threw and interception. We had our share of stupid penalties too. St Clair had 2 holding penalties and a penalty for not lining up on the line. We had another penalty for not lining up on the line. Those are the stupidest of penalties. You should know where to line up. Browns 20 Lions 3 at the half.

Ratliff started the 2nd half. He doesn’t look good to me. He looks like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He handed off his first 4 plays and 2 consecutive 4 and outs. James Davis had an 81 yard TD run right through the middle which he cut to the outside. Even though we haven’t had any sacks yet, the Browns are putting some pressure on Detroit’s QB. I noticed through the first 3 quarters the leading tacklers for the Browns was Wimbley who was followed by 3 def backs. That is not good when your DB’s are making so many tackles.

Stupid penalties continue into the 4th quarter. Defensive holding on a Detroit punt gives them the ball back with a chance for a FG which luckily is missed. Ratliff also missed Leggett on a wide open long pass that he over threw by 5 yards. Leggett had his defender beat by 7 yards. Another penalty on the Browns on a Zastudil punt that drops dead inside the 5. Quarterman gets flagged for holding on a Herron 34 yard run also. We are shooting our selves. Paul Raymond who they just picked up has an end around for 20 yards.

We did correct some problems this week but we played the 0-16 Lions. None of the QB’s were exceptional. Davis looked good running the ball. The QB’s distributed the ball to 9 different receivers, the defense gave up only 103 yards rushing, we weren’t dominated, and we had 6 passes over 20 yards. Just remember we played the Lions.

Oh, there are still a lot of areas that need work. Penalties, penalties, penalties. The stupid penalties are killing us. 85 yards in penalties. That’s way too much, plus most of them were stupid. Ratliff and Bartel both looked lousy.

A couple great pick ups. Dawson kicked good and Zastudil had a couple bomb punts called back for penalties. Over all we had a better game but it’s early and we still need a lot of work, but I did see improvement. Keep up the hard work and get ready for Tennessee next Saturday. GO BROWNS ! !
