That was really nerve racking! By that I’m referring to when the game which was announced to be broadcasted on NFL network was replaced with the Vikings game. I like to DVR the first quarter so I can watch the game with no commercials. Luckily I was able to catch the game on FOX and only missed the first fifteen minutes. THis did however end my subscription to the NFL network.
So about the game. I hope everyone is remembering that it was preseason and that it is a time to test players who are on the bubble.
I’m just going to go over the points that I numbered in order to give my opinions and hopefully get some feedback.
#1-Harris didn’t play so that left plenty of time to evaluate the others. Idonije and Gilbert both played well. They were much better at defending the run than rushing the passer. So I think they should at the least not be the problem area they were last season when the LBs had to crowd the line to defend the run up the middle. I think that when the games start to matter we will see a better pass rush.
#2-Nathan Vasher looked like a target out there. Hopefully they can get the right combination of players in the right positions come regular season. D.J.Moore had one nice play but was burned a couple times also. I thought Woodny Turenne had a few good plays and warrants a longer look.
#3-Al Afalava looked very impressive. If he can continue this level of play I would say let him have the starting spot. Manning doesn’t have any serious experience anyways, so why not just let the kid learn on the job?
#4-Rideau disappeared like it was a regular season game. Aromashodu wasn’t given much of a shot either. Last night looked like a battle between Knox, Iglesis, and Davis. If it wasn’t for the turnover by Knox I’d say that him and Davis looked about the same out there. Iglesis had a TD but he dropped a kick off, which he recovered.
I think these guys will play better next week so I’m not really nervous about them.
#5-They weren’t really committed to running the ball so it was hard to evaluate anyone. The undrafted rookie Ta’ufo’ou made a few good blocks and also scored a TD.
#6-I think Cutler looked mobile but was late in his reads. He should have been picked a second time and under threw Hester deep for the pick. Which he than blamed on Hester on the post game interview. He said that Hester is a go get it WR instead of a comeback jumping WR. He threw it short on a guy that was doubled and needs to admit fault instead of passing it. The guy has talent and should improve with practice.
The story of the position was Caleb Hanie. He had all the tools you like to see and even got a TD pass. He missed a wide open Rashied Davis but over all the Bears should feel confident that they have a solid QB that can step up if needed.
#7-Forte didn’t play and they weren’t committed to the run at all. They obviously were running just enough to keep the Bills in an honest defense in order to evaluate the passing game. Jones did look good in his attempts. Wolfe and Peterson also looked good when they were called in. The spent a lot of plays looking at Wolfe in different plays to see where he would fit in with the team. I think that they are considering keeping three backs and are weighing Wolfe’s worth. He performed well but I still think Peterson is the better back having made better runs in the game.
Another position that I didn’t even mention was the TE. Olsen was out and Clark was limited in playing time. He did make a nice catch up the sidelines to show that even though he was demoted he’s still got game. Also Kellen Davis had an excellent game with two catches for 29 yards.
This was just a preseason game where they were locked in on testing players in the DB and WR positions. I liked what little they were showing and can’t wait until next week end.
