Can Bears LB Urlacher Return to Defensive Player of the Year Form?

Those of you who have actually watched Bears games over the last 10 years know exactly where the sun rises and sets with our defense…that would be the person wearing the # 54 in case you didn’t know.

Over the last few seasons ive listened to countless announcers constantly say “wheres Urlacher” or “he’s not what he used to be”. In some aspects their correct, but to those of us who know Bear football know that our man in the middle is far from being washed up.

We know Brians had some back and neck issues the last few years, but those seem to be behind him or at least manageable now. The other big issue in his production I feel is the decrease in defensive line play. Not knowing if your gonna have Tommie Harris from week to week is a killer, not to mention the revolving door at the other tackle spot. We are a long way from the days where Teddy Washington and Keith Traylor use to suck up the whole offensive line leaving Urlacher free to roam the middle without drawing assignments. If theres solid and stable D-line play Brian can get back to business and do what he does best…make plays!

A minor contributor to 54s decrease in production is the horrible play from the secondary. Theres a lot of injuries back there, Tillman, Vasher, and Brown couldn’t seem to stay healthy. Those factors led to the most ridiculous defensive scheme our ridiculous D coordinator could come up with…The Mug Up look. What exactly was Bob Babich thinking?…”heres an idea Lovie, lets have our best player run up to the line, then right before they snap the ball, we’ll have him run back to the secondary”…….uhhh….im still confused.

Enter Rod Marinelli, not the greatest head coach, but ask anybody around the league and they’ll say the same…the guy can flat out coach a defense. If Rod can produce half of what his rep is then were in great shape. By giving our line some actual coaching and confidence, that should sure up the D line. Hopefully with a healthy secondary and some new emerging stars in Zack Bowman and Cory Graham our secondary will also be sured up, thus leading to Urlacher being in the form he showed in 05 where he was the DPOY.

Now on to the reason that sparked this article. If anybody has seen the little coverage from Bears camp you will know that 54 has been everywhere. It’s a love affair right now between Cutler & Urlacher where each one is saying how amazing the others been so far, but what stood out to me was the interceptions Brian has made on Jay in practice.

The 1 they’ve shown on ESPN recently shows Cutler looking off the safety and trying to come back over the middle only to have 54 pick it off and take it back to the house. I fully understand its only a preseason practice but what ive seen out of him and the team so far has me excited like a kid again. Keep up the good work guys!

Im very excited to see the finished product, lets get it done for Olin and Brian this year. Three playoff appearances in 10 years for them! They deserve more than that!

With Cutler on the offense and Urlacher on the defense, the Bears have enviable axioms from which plenty on each side should flow.
