The Browns made their first surprising roster move of the summer, as they released veteran defensive lineman Shaun Smith early Saturday. Smith’s agent, Neil Schwartz, said his client informed him that he has been let go by the team.
So far the Browns have made no immediate comment but coach Eric Mangini is expected to address Smith’s status at a news briefing today. Smith played two seasons with the Browns after signing as a free agent in 2007. He made nine starts last season and finished with 47 tackles in 11 games.
What Smith likely will be remembered for was his reported off-the-field confrontation with quarterback Brady Quinn. Smith reportedly punched Quinn in the face following an argument in the team’s weight room. He was also well known to his opponents as guy who did as much with his mouth as his body on the field.
