Redskins Grab DE Brian Orakpo w/ #13 Pick

orakpo
The Redskins went defense with their first pick on Saturday, as they picked up Texas DE Brian Orakpo. The pass rusher fell to them as he lasted a lot longer than most thought he would.

Here’s the lowdown on Orakpo from Draft Countdown:

Strengths:

Outstanding athlete…Great speed, acceleration and quickness…Very explosive with a burst…Smooth and fluid…Does a great job in pursuit…Terrific range and is comfortable in space…Phenomenal strength…Excellent leaper and bats a lot of passes…Plays with good leverage…Gives a solid effort against the run…Has an extremely impressive physique…Intense and competitive…Hard worker…Very productive … Offers some versatility … Still improving and has upside.

Weaknesses:

Durability is a major concern…Inconsistent…Motor runs hot and cold…Repertoire of pass rush moves is limited…Average instincts and awareness…Doesn’t use his hands well…Has a narrow base…Is not overly stout at the point of attack and can be run at…Has some trouble shedding blocks…Underachieved early in his career…Is he a ‘tweener?

Notes:

Could also project to outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme…A two-year starter for the Longhorns…Weight just 210 pounds when he arrived in Austin…His uncle, Chike, played football at Iowa…Named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2005…Missed four games with a right knee injury in 2007…Recorded 3.0 TFL and 2.0 Sacks in the Holiday Bowl as a junior and was named MVP…Was a unanimous 1st Team All-American in 2008…Won the Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player), Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman) and Hendricks Award (nation’s top defensive end), and was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a senior…Missed some time in 2008 with a sprained left knee…A beast in the weight room who reportedly bench presses 515 pounds and power cleans 380 pounds…Is said to have a 40+ inch vertical…One of the best pass rushers in the nation and should be one of the top defensive prospects available thanks to a standout senior campaign and amazing workouts.
