I recently ran an article in which I scoured through piles upon piles of mock drafts and found that 21% of them had the Vikings taking Percy Harvin at #22. He was the most selected player at the time, and I vowed to do that again right before the draft to see if anything changes. I have not gone back through the ddrafts yet, but it does look like the Harvin-to-Vikings trend is going to see a dramatic change between now and draft day.
Harvin has seen his draft stock tumble greatly over the last couple of weeks. With rumors of drug use, off the field incidents, coachability questions, a reported 12 on the Wonderlic test, hanging out with a bad crowd, and a lack of respect for authority it is understandable that teams would do their homework before selecting this guy. However, as Ben Volin points out, rumors are often inaccurate and come from curious sources.
NFLdraftbible.com made the drug use report almost two weeks ago, and they’re not a major player in football media. At least not major like Sports Illustrated, ESPN, profootballtalk.com, or Sporting News of which none have been able to confirm the report. Also, the agents of other receivers like Heyward-Bey or Britt could be spreading the rumors in an attempt to raise their clients’ draft stock. Who knows what the truth is, but regardless, Harvin will see his stock take a hit and there is not much he can do about it.
Those rumors combined with durability and quality-of-play issues could be enough to drop Harvin out of the Viking’s sights, and maybe out of the first round. Rick Spielman, the Vikes VP of player personnel, recently told the Star Tribune “There are some rumors going around now about [him] potentially being dirty at the combine, so we’re going through all that. But he’s a very explosive receiver.”
It wont be long, and we’ll see what type of player and person the Vikings really think Harvin is.
