Another player goes over to the dark side. There are certain teams – at least if you’re a Boston Sports fan – that you always want your team to beat. The Red Sox – the Yankees are going down. The Bruins – the Canadians are chump change. The Celtics – BEAT LA! And for me, when it’s the New England Patriots there is NOTHING I like better then beating the New York Jets! Yes, the J-E-T-S! There is no other team I hate more in the NFL then the NY Jets! (Okay – maybe seeing Peyton’s face a million times during each game is nauseating, but that’s a rant for another day.) And now they have one of our guys.
Larry Izzo, an 8th year linebacker who was captain of our specials team, signed as a free agent with the New York Jets this week. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but it doesn’t really matter. He was a member of the class of 2001 that Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli brought in. The team won 3 Super Bowl Championships while he was here. (There are only 6 people left on the team who have played for all three Championships – Tom Brady, Matt Light, Kevin Faulk, Tedy Bruschi, Richard Seymour, and Stephen Neal.) And now he is gone – to them!
But are we, perhaps, removing some distractions from the team? Izzo is on the government’s witness list in the case against Barry Bonds. In a document detailing their witness list, prosecutors have said that Izzo would testify that Bonds’s personal trainer, Greg Anderson, provided him with performance-enhancing drugs in 2003 and instructions and a schedule for using them. The NFL has said that they will only suspend Izzo if it is determined that the used PEDs. We have no way of knowing what will come out in court. We do know that the whole thing will be a great distraction to the team; but I guess that isn’t our problem any more.
Yes – players change teams. It’s just part of the business of football. But did Larry Izzo have to go and play for THEM?
