Ravens Promote LB Coach Mattison to Defensive Coordinator

The Ravens have a new defensive coordinator, as the team has promoted linebackers coach Greg Mattison to replace Rex Ryan, who left to be the new head coach of the New York Jets. The Ravens have a presser set for today to make the fomal announcement of the hiring.

The 59-year-old Mattison replaces Ryan, who was with the team for four seasons before taking to the Jets to be their new coach. Mattison will take over a defense that was ranked 2nd in 2008, and is one of the best in the league. His linebacker core with Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott is one of the best in the league, but all three are free agents.

Mattison has tons of experience, with 39 years of coaching under his belt. He started his career at the high school level before serving as an assistant at Illinois, Cornell and Northwestern. He met Harbaugh while serving a six-year stint at Western Michigan from 1981-86. Mattison then spent two years at Navy, followed by stays at Texas A&M, Michigan, Notre Dame and Florida.
