Chiefs Coach Edwards Heading to Tampa?

Every year about this time speculation starts about which coach is getting fired or bought out or stepping down and the rumors start to swirl about who the replacement will be.

Herm Edwards would seem to be safe before the off season started he got the permission of the G.M. and the owner to start a complete rebuilding project and just a month ago the owner spoke to the media to reaffirm his belief in his coach.

But this is the age of rumors and speculation just two weeks ago internet reports and message boards had Edwards reportedly interested in going back to accept the head coaching position at his alma mater San Diego State University. To respond to that rumor coach Edwards was quoted as saying “ I already have a college team and I am coaching it”.

This week is a real domino effect rumor, Phil Fulmer was forced to step down at Tennessee he was replaced by former Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin will be brining Tampa Bay defensive coordinator and father Monte Kiffin with him to coach the defense. The rumor has Herm if fired going back to Tampa to accept the defensive coordinator position, from a outsider prospective this would have some merit. Herm has roots in Tampa and he keeps a home there.

In addition Tampa is a attractive opening, Jon Gruden lets his assistants coach and the defense is one of the top units in the N.F.L. It also doesn’t hurt to have warm sunny weather and owners with deep pockets on your side.

These rumors will probably turn out to be nothing more than just rumors. I could see Herm getting booted after the season if the Chiefs only won one game. But after the victory at Oakland and the improved play over the past six weeks, despite the barrage of injuries Herm’s job is probably as safe as it has been all season.

Clark Hunt the Chiefs owner is a smart man he knows this team has drafted talent and he knows that talent is starting to gel and develop and he also knows the best way to disrupt that growth is to start flipping coaches in and out every year. Over the last four weeks of the season the Chiefs have a couple of winnable games and if Herm can steal one or two of those games down the stretch he will almost be guaranteed a invitation to return next season.
