Although no official announcement has been made, and Coach Tom Cable did not mention it during his daily meeting with the media Thursday, reports out of Oakland are saying that Oakland Raider wide receiver Javon Walker is scheduled to undergo ankle surgery in the very near future and is out for the remainder of the season.
Walker told reports Thursday that his season is over after injuring his left ankle during the Raiders 17-6 loss to Carolina last Sunday. Walker was not at practice, but walked into the Oakland locker room using a pair of crutches and wearing a high protective boot on his left foot. Walker told reporters ” I am done for the season. They have to put some screws in.”
Walker injured himself while making a 14 yard catch in the second quarter against Carolina. He limped off the field, but later returned to make another catch in the second half. Even though he was able to finish the game, he did not practice Wednesday, and had tests done Thursday. Coach Cable apparently had not spoken to Javon, and was unaware of his status.
Walkers 3 catches against the Panthers gave him a total of 15 catches in 9 games for the season. When they signed him this past off season to a 55 million dollar 6 year contract, the Raiders were hoping that Javon would solidify a weak receiver corps and become an anchor for the team. Those hopes obviously never materialized.
During the off-season workouts, Walker was criticized by then coach Lane Kiffin for being out of shape. Then in June, Javon was seriously injured in an apparent robbery in Las Vegas, and then missed the Raiders season opener against Denver with a hamstring injury.
You do the math with me.. 55 Million dollar contract divided by 6 years equals roughly 9.16 million dollars. Number of catches the first year equals 15. 9.16 million dollars divided by those 15 catches equals $6111,111.00 a catch. Nice investment Mr Davis.. For that much money, I would have gotten MY fat-azz on the field against any NFL defense and risked my health to make 15 catches.. I hear that Ryan Leaf is available.. maybe the Raiders can sign HIM to 100 million dollar 6 year contract and have his yell at some reporters.. Is Tim Couch still out there maybe? Unbelievable..
Not ALL the news is bad for Oakland today.. QB Jamarcus Russell practiced Thursday and should be back in time for Sundays loss – err I mean game against the resurgent Miami Dolphins. That’s a good thing because back-up QB Andrew Walter, who started against Carolina, was unable to practice with a high ankle sprain.
Also on the injury front, Rookie RB Darren McFadden (who has single handily ruined my season in 2 Fantasy Football leagues ) has been cleared to play for the first time since October 19th. Said McFadden, ” I’m ready to go. I’ve been feeling real nice the last two days of practice, just being able to go out there and run and not have pain. At first just walking on it was hard on me, but then as that went away, it was trying to cut the bursts and the cuts.”
The Oakland Raiders 2008 / 2009 Season – A Season of Futility – continues Sunday against the Dolphins..
