Pressure on the Pats After Nightmare in San Diego

After Sunday night’s 30-10 trouncing by the Chargers, the Pats have got to get on track.  And fast.  It was not only a bad loss on the road against a team they had owned over the past few seasons, it was a game in which they were beat up and down the field all night long.

Bill Belichick may have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to get this team back to the Super Bowl this year.  Anyone that actually thought that Matt Cassel was going to be Tom Brady part 2 had better think again.  While Cassel is a nice prospect, he by no means is Brady, and that is showing more and more.

The team has got to rely more on defense, as well as on special teams.  It’s what they did in 2001 when they won the Super Bowl, and if they are going to challenge the Bills for the division they are likely going to have to go that route again.  Problem last night was the defense was not very good against Philip Rivers and the Chargers.

They couldn’t stop the big play, allowing three receptions of at least 48 yards.  All night long Chargers wide outs were making big catches, and the secondary is not looking aggressive as they have been getting burned time and time again.  It’s got to be a major concern to the coaches.

As far as getting back to the offense, take a long look at the running game, or lack of it.  With all the pressure on Cassel to make plays, the running game is getting a free pass, when they really need those players that are in there, whoever it is, to step up and make some plays.

Take away Cassel’s 29 rushing yards, and the Pats ran for 77 yards.  Not enough to get it done.  They need to get healthy and do more in the running game to help out Cassel.  For now, Belichick and the rest of the staff is going to earn their money, as they are going to have to come up with a better game plan for Monday night vs the Broncos.

If not, this team may very well be 3-3 after six games of the 08 season.
