When the 2008 off-season began — soon after the Giants’ amazing victory in SB XLII over the unbeaten Patriots — you could actually hear ankles snapping, fibulas breaking and femurs cracking as the football ‘experts’ in the media began jumping OFF the Giants’ bandwagon.
No way they wanted to be accused of being “fooled” by what had to be a “fluke” because — when the Giants returned to the reality in 2008 – the “experts” didn’t want to be standing there with their bare faces hanging out.
Today, after a 4-0 record and Sunday’s mauling of the Seahawks 44-6 with 523 yards of offense divided equally between rushing and passing and only one offensive penalty all game — you can hear the sound of tendons, ligaments and groin muscles tearing as these same “experts” jump back ON the Giants’ bandwagon.
Now, all of a sudden, the Giants are a great team; maybe even the best team in the NFL. Now, they wonder aloud, can The Giants go undefeated? Now, they marvel at Eli’s growth, the team’s incredible depth and the coaching skills of Tom Coughlin.
Well, a word or two to the “experts.” Yes, the Giants really are a very good team. And, yes Eli has matured. And, yes, they have great depth. And, yes, Tom Coughlin has done exactly what he promised when introduced as Head Coach in 2004. He’s restored Giants’ pride. He and Jerry Reese have put together a smart, tough, well-prepared team. But a great team? A potentially undefeated team?
C’mon, guys, isn’t it a bit early for that? I mean, we’re only 4 games into a very long, unpredictable season. So, c’mon, “expert” dudes, stop jumping on and off the bandwagon — you’re making me seasick.
By the way, as a little boy — having only heard about the Giants Championship Game victory over the Bears in 1956 — with my ear pressed against a transistor radio, I listened to the 1958 Giants/Colts Championship game and, then, listened and/or watched the Giants Championship Games of 1959, 1961, 1962 and 1963.
And, after The “Dark Ages” of the late 60’s and 70’s, I again witnessed Championships in the 1986 and 1990. But, in my humble opinion, this Giants’ team is the best Giants’ TEAM I’ve ever seen. Not sexy. Not loaded with superstars. Not flashy. Just a smart, tough, complete TEAM – from Management, through the GM and Coaching, through the players. And, that’s the point the “experts” may be missing.
They’re not a ‘flavor-of-the-month.’ They’re a real TEAM in every sense of the word. And, since professional football is the ultimate TEAM game, they’ve got a chance to be great. It’ll take a couple of Championships to prove it but this TEAM just might do that. But they aren’t great yet!
