I keep insisting the Rams are not this bad, and I hope I’m right for the sake of my personal well-being, but all signs in 2008 point to me being completely, utterly wrong. Every player interviewed doesn’t know what is wrong, but that there is something terribly wrong.
There seem to be no leaders on the team and the head coach is not leading the team – as evidenced by only 3 wins in the past 2 years. If the Rams think that anything is going to turn around against the surging Buffalo Bills with the current administration, they are fooling themselves.
So, here’s my recommendation for the Rams in between Week 3 and Week 4. Fire Scott Linehan and Jim Haslett. That’s the easy part. They don’t have the fire any more, they have lost the players and nothing is working for the defense. Promote Al Saunders to interim head coach. He hasn’t been a head coach in over 20 years, but Saunders doesn’t have the stain on his hands of the coaches who have been in St. Louis for 3 years. We can leave the hiring of a good football man as GM to the offseason.
Put every single player on notice that their job isn’t safe and every single player should play against Buffalo, New England and Dallas as an audition for their job. Try to light a fire under the players. Every player that was quoted as saying that the team is in bad shape did not offer an excuse to why they personally were playing badly. Until players are held accountable for bad play, they will continue to play badly.
Additionally, one last thing… let’s teach tackling at practice. I don’t really care about risking injury in practice, as the defense actually needs to practice fundamentals. They should open up the sleds, tackling dummies and all that good stuff.
Will it work? Probably not, but at least the Rams will be trying to be something other than the laughingstock of the league. The Rams have to change something, because they can’t keep going on like this for another week.
