With the team desperate for a win, the Chargers did not get good news today, as star RB LaDainian Tomlinson sat out practice today with his lingering toe injury. “Well, with another day of rest and treatment, it’s feeling a little better today, so hopefully, I’m just going to play it by ear this week, see how it feels later in the week,” he said. “I’m hoping that it’s going to make big progress this week and by Monday night hopefully I’ll be as close to 100 percent as possible.”
L.T. has not been himself at all in 2008, as Sunday vs the Broncos in a wild 39-38 loss, he ran for just 26 yards on 10 carries. So far in two games he’s run for just 123 yards on 31 carries, and has not yet scored. He’s also caught just five passes for 29 yards. “I feel better than last week,” Tomlinson said. “If I’m judging by last week, I should be able to play.”
Sure, he can play, but how effective will he be as the Chargers take on the Jets on Monday night football in San Diego in what has turned into basically a must-win for a team that many felt was a solid Super Bowl contender. Right now the Chargers are riding on the play of QB Philip Rivers, who has thrown for six TD’s in two games. Bottom line though is they would be a lot better off with a healthy Tomlinson.
