Vince Young. Matt Leinart. Jay Cutler. The so called ‘trio’ of the 2006 draft class. The star QB’s. Vince Young was coming off an epic Rose Bowl performance(still one of the best games I’ve ever seen). Matt Leinart finished 3rd in the Heisman a year after winning it all.
And then there was Jay Cutler, a big-time QB from a small-time program in Vanderbilt. The debate was over who was better: Young or Leinart? Cutler was a distant third. When the draft played out, it was Young to the Titans, Leinart to the Cardinals, and Cutler to the Broncos.
Fast forward two years. Vince Young is hurt, and having emotional problems. Matt Leinart is warming the bench. The two stars are far from it. So what about Cutler? He has quickly emerged into one of the best young QB’s in the league, showing off a strong arm, and gutsy decision-making, reminiscent of a young Brett Favre.
Sunday against the Chargers Cutler was 36-50, 350 yards, and 4 TD’s. Denver’s 2-0, with Cutler. Arizona’s 2-0…with Kurt Warner. Tennesse’s 2-0…mainly with Kerry Collins. So, it’s clear. Cutler is the best QB of the 2006 draft.
