In a seemingly never-ending situation, the Ravens still don’t have a quarterback. Troy Smith has a viral infection, and Kyle Boller has a shoulder injury. Joe Flacco, their first round pick, has impressed in the preseason, but you get the sense from Ozzie Newsome and John Harbaugh that they don’t want to throw him out there if he’s not ready.
They made that mistake with Kyle Boller, and he hasn’t really recovered. So what do they do? They can try to make Willis McGahee the main guy, with Ray Rice spelling him. If Defenses expect run, they might stack the box, leading to more passing opportunities for Flacco. With the eight, nine guys up front, he would have to make quick decisions, something that he may not be accustomed to playing at Delaware. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than the alternatives.
There are some free agent QB’s out there. They could sign Daunte Culpepper. They can trade for Cam Cameron’s guy John Beck, someone who knows the system. But, unless Flacco makes an impressive leap from I-AA Delaware, and he adjusts quickly, it could be a long year. But then again, they did win the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer at the helm. So, anything is possible.
