Bengals RB Johnson’s Future Still Up in the Air

What exactly happened last night to running back Rudi Johnson is anyone’s guess. Johnson was supposed to be showcased from all reports by the Bengals who reportedly have him on the trading block. Instead of showcasing him, the team hid him deep on the bench, and even though he was dressed, he never made it on the field during the teams 27-7 win over the Colts.

Johnson has been rather outspoken about the position he’s in, and has said more than once that he expects the Bengals to deal him before the start of the season, or flat out release him. Following the win he did say he “wasn’t surprised that he didn’t play” and “they (the Bengals) stuck with the plan (to rest him).” Johnson has been his own worst enemy as an injury last year held him to just 11 games and when he did play he wasn’t very good, rushing for just 497 yards (45.2 yards per game) and three TD’s.

Reports say that the Bengals are ready to feature Chris Perry at the running back spot, as he started last night’s win and had 20 yards on 9 carries and a score. They also have DeDe Dorsey and Kenny Watson to turn to in their crowded backfield. Sources say the team wants to deal Johnson for a wide out, as injuries to Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh have put the team in a bind in that spot.

For now though, what happens to Rudi is up in the air, as with not playing last night it seems possible the team may be more on the verge of releasing him than trying to find another team that would be interested in trading a wide out for his services.
