A new player was bouncing around in the red “hands off” jersey today but, he wasn’t a new signee to compete for the quarterback spot but rather it was a key cog to the vaunted defense. There have been a wave of injuries in the early stages of Ravens camp but the one that surprisingly has been under the radar was the shoulder injury to Ed Reed.
Perhaps, because the team has downplayed injuries so much and due to the volume of bodies in need of nursing Reed hasn’t received a lot of attention. But he was back at practice today running full speed batting down balls, and bumping receivers. He appeared to look ready.
However, when he met with reporters after practice his words told a different story.
“It’s day to day right now. I can’t really explain it to this point because I’m still researching it myself,” Reed said. “I figure it might be all right. If not, we’ll deal with it then.”
He seems to express some genuine concern even though the team is still a little under a month out before the home opener against Cincinnati on September 7th. Reed hasn’t missed a game in the last two years and has missed only seven in six years – six of them in 2005 (ankle). He has always been considered a “gamer” and a player who truly enjoys playing the game. Are his measured words a sign that the injury is much more serious than anyone thought?
