Brown’s 4 Field Goals Boost Texans Past Broncos 19-16

Kris Brown kicked 4 field goals, including the game-winner on the last play of the game, leading the Houston Texans past the Denver Broncos 19-16 at Reliant Stadium on Saturday night. But it was the work of wide receiver David Anderson that was the impetus for the Texans as he caught 6 balls for 67 yards and a touchdown; he also made a clutch catch which helped set up a FG by Brown.

The Texans, in their victory, lost running back Ahman Green on the first play of their first offensive series; it was learned that he had strained his groin. One play later, Denver lost linebacker Boss Bailey with a sprained ankle; according to Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, Bailey could miss a couple weeks and will undergo tests on Sunday. Another Bronco went down for the count as Bailey’s replacement, Louis Green, left the field on a stretcher with a neck injury and a concussion; Bailey was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, but was able to rejoin the team for their flight back to Denver.

The Broncos’ lone TD was by way of a 15-yard run by quarterback Jay Cutler late in the first quarter, which preceded a 23-yards FG by the Texans’ Brown. The second quarter was similar to the opening period as Brown nailed a 52-yard FG while Texans QB Sage Rosenfels threw a TD pass to Anderson at the 9:40 mark of the second period. The third and fourth quarters were a duel of the field goal kickers, with Denver kicker Matt Prater nailing down 3 FG’s in the second half while Brown hit a pair, including the game-winner.

Cutler led the trio of Broncos QB’s, going 8-of-10 for 59 yards and a rushing TD while Darrell Hackney was 4-of-7 for 62 yards; Patrick Ramsey didn’t help himself at all as he went 6-of-11 for only 32 yards and 2 interceptions. Meanwhile, Rosenfels led the Texans QB’s by going 10-of-15 for 137 yards and a TD while Matt Schaub played briefly, going 4-of-5 for 29 yards. Second-year RB Andre Hall led all Broncos RB’s with 43 yards on only 8 carries while Anthony Alridge added 20 yards on 4 carries; Houston was led by rookie RB Steve Slaton with 11 carries for 37 yards while Darius Walker added 29 yards on 8 carries.

Tight end Tony Scheffler led all Broncos receivers with 3 receptions for 47 yards while Anderson led the Texans receivers with 67 yards on 6 catches; Jacoby Jones added a catch for 41 yards. The Broncos were led on defense by cornerback Christian Morton with 6 tackles while safety Josh Barrett added 4 tackles with 3 assisted; LB Jordan Beck added a sack along with 3 tackles. Second-year LB Zac Diles led the Texans defense with 5 tackles with one assisted while rookie safety Dominique Barber added 5 tackles; CB Jamar Fletcher and S Nick Ferguson had an INT apiece. Denver returns home to host the Dallas Cowboys on August 16 while Houston makes the short trip to New Orleans to face the Saints, also on August 16.
