Hill and Smith Appear Neck and Neck Heading into Training Camp

If the 49’ers two QB’s are going to have the competition that the team feels they will in training camp, one thing each is going to have to do is learn new offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s system quickly. According to reports, both Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are doing a good job at learning the system of Martz, and with it both should have equal opportunity to win the starting QB job starting next month at camp.

Sporting News reports that the last thing both QB’s worked on in OTA’s were hot reads, and both did well, meaning that they should have a clean slate heading into training camp in July.  Many feel that Smith, the first overall pick in 2005, is heading towards a make or break season, and that if he falters or does not flat out win the job from Hill, his days in the Bay may be numbered.

As for Hill, he’ll be the player the fans will pull for as the underdog in this battle.  He played well enough in the two games he started a year ago to make this a battle, one that in the end may find him under center.  Martz wants to go with his guy, and if in the end he feels that guy is Hill, he’ll make it known to Mike Nolan and others that he’s the QB he wants in there.

For now, this should be one of the better QB battles to watch, as the two go at it tooth and nail to lead a Niners offense that took a major step backwards last year, but with Martz doing his magic, the offense is looking to make major strides in 2008.
