Johnson at Camp; Takes the Morning Off – Practices in the Afternoon

Chad Johnson

It was an interesting day for the Bengals and wide out Chad Johnson.  First he showed up to the teams mandatory morning minicamp, but played hurt (ankle) and did not take part in any of the teams practice.  Suddenly though, Johnson recovered well enough to take the field in the afternoon session, and actually ran a few plays and caught a few passes.

The team put out a statement about 3pm about Johnson’s injury that caused him to miss the morning session, and they said it was a back injury.  “Chad Johnson was given a physical (exam) this morning by one of the Bengals’ team doctors. He did not report any physical problems to the doctor, and he was cleared by the doctor for practice. Later, after the physical was concluded, Chad told our training staff that his back was sore. He refused to practice.”

Johnson himself didn’t speak to the media, and it was not until after he did snag a few passes in the afternoon session that the media was able to talk to Marvin Lewis about Chad and the eventful day.  “I’m not going to beat around the bush,” head coach Marvin Lewis said in a news conference. “Obviously, all of you guys are here to see if Chad was going to show, and obviously he did. But at some point earlier in the morning, he expressed to the medical staff that he had some sort of ailment, and we’re investigating what kind of ailment it is. They’re going to do some further studying. We’ll see how it goes for the rest of the weekend.

“Anyway, he’s here and went through the meetings and those things, but obviously didn’t take any reps, which is kind of good, because it allows us to continue to move forward. The young guys need the work; it’s good work for them and good opportunity to keep going. I think that’s where we are.”

Always drama when it comes to Johnson and those lovable Bengals.
