The San Francisco 49’ers have not seen much success over the past few seasons, but with a number of offseason pickups, mostly focused on offense, the team is hoping to have a much better 2008. One question that will need to be answered quickly is who will be the starting QB come September 9th? Alex Smith has not seen eye to eye much with Mike Nolan, and as a former #1 overall pick still has a lot to prove. Shaun Hill got a new deal, and showed some grit in leading the team to two wins in last season starts. The team was awful on offense last year, and with Mike Martz coming in they will focus a lot more on putting points on the board, something they couldn’t do much of in 2007.
DeShaun Foster comes in to help at RB from the Panthers, Bryant Johnson joins the team to help the WR core from Arizona, and Isaac Bruce is determined to show he has gas in the tank coming from the Rams. On defense they grabbed former Bengal Justin Smith, who is a quality as a pass rusher, and drafted Kentwan Balmer who should help the D as well. Nolan is on the hot seat this season, and he’d better get the QB spot settled early, and make sure that they use Frank Gore to the fullest and revamp that offense with Martz in control.
