It is being reported that former University of Akron and current Miami Dolphins star Jason Taylor have agreed to part ways. This seperation is due to happen sometime between now and the NFL Draft on April 26.
Taylor has spent his entire 11-year career with the Dolphins. According to sources within the organization there is said to be no animosity between Taylor and the new Dolphins regime of GM Bill Parcells and Head Coach Tony Sparano .
While the Dolphins are coming off their worst year in team history, it is no secret that they are trying to get younger. The Fins who have reportedly $44 million to spend in the free agent market have been quiet for the most part. Yes, they have signed six players so far but who are you supposed to get excited about if your a Dolphins fan? Josh McCown, Reggie Torbor or Randy Starks? Um, I’ll take what the heck are they doing to my team for $1000 Alex, the answer we were 1-15 last year and look to be just as bad this year? Who are the 2008 Miami Dolphins?
The Dolphins did trade for a nice player in Jason Ferguson but he is 33 and at best a stop gap player for them. He is a Tuna guy though playing for five seasons for Parcells. He can bring some focus and work ethic to the Dolphins that is much needed.
Taylor who will be 34 before next season begins is a guy who has averaged 11.5 sacks per year for his career. He also has had at 11 sacks in six of his last eight seasons. Not only is he still a great player but he is a character guy you hear about from a lot of GM’s. He was the 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year recipiant and the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award winner.
Taylor who will miss significant training time this off season as he has already moved to Hollywood to begin training for Dancing with the Stars. Depending on how far he makes it on the show he could be there until mid May.
Taylor has two years remaining on his contract that pays him $7.5 million this season and $8 million in 2009. There is no guarantee Taylor will finish out the term of his current contract. If he does go two more years he would like to go somewhere and contend.
There were plenty of rumors that the asking price for Taylor may be a second and a fourth round pick. There were also some rumors floating around that the Packers may want Taylor to dance his way to Green Bay.
All of this remains to be seen though as we wait to see if Taylor can pull a Jerry Rice and win the hearts of America on Dancing with the Stars.
