Heads or Tails? Falcons Win Coin Toss to Claim 3rd Pick in the Draft

The Falcons had luck on their side Friday, as they won the coin toss that will allow them to pick third in the upcoming NFL Draft at the end of April. The Falcons will have the third pick, and then it will be Oakland picking at number four, and the Chiefs at number five. Each of those three teams went 4-12 this past season. Draft positions are determined by team records and schedules, with the easier schedules getting the higher draft seeding. A coin toss is used to break ties.

The way that the contest to determine the third through fifth picks worked like this – The Falcons had the first call and won the toss. Under that scenario, the Falcons got the third pick and the Raiders the fourth pick. Had the Falcons lost the toss and the Raiders won, the Raiders would have drafted third, and then the Falcons would have flipped against the Chiefs for the No. 4 and No. 5 picks.

Not that the Raiders and Chiefs fared much better, but maybe it was fate that the Falcons finally had something go their way. They first had the Michael Vick saga, then had the DeAngelo Hall fiasco, their coach quit after 13 games, and then Bill Parcells used them to get more money from Miami to become their GM. So maybe with the events of today things may be turning around for Arthur Blank and the Falcons. Then again, maybe they didn’t want the third pick and wanted to be at 4 or 5. All that remains to be seen.
