The Pats are playing with fire, as they today decided NOT to franchise wide out Randy Moss, hoping instead to simply resign him. The move not to put the tag on Moss means that he’s open to go the free agent route IF he and the Pats cannot come to terms before February 29th. Moss had a historic season, as he caught 98 passes for 1493 yards and a new NFL record 23 touchdowns. Now it will be interesting to see what happens next in the Moss saga. He (of course) has said that he wants to come back to the Pats, and that desire may be even more intense since the team fell one game short of their perfect season. But, what happens if some team comes along and gives Moss a mega deal for 3-4 years? Does his desire to play for a winner and try to get back to the Super Bowl get in the way of what could be a HUGE payday from another club?
There are plenty of teams that would love to have a player with the talent and ability of Moss. The thing now will be can he and the Pats get a deal done before next week. The teams that would line up to get a shot at Moss would be the following:
Philadelphia – The Eagles need a playmaker at wide out, but one would have to wonder if they would take a shot at Moss after what happened with Terrell Owens a few seasons back? It may be worth the risk.
New Orleans – Drew Brees would love to have a target like Moss, and the Saints offense would get a boost with a player like Moss. A move like that would also pay off big time for Saints current #1 receiver Marques Colston.
Miami – What a way to make an impact under the new Tony Sparano-Bill Parcells Era but to sign a mega player like Moss. Problem is, if Moss wants to win now, the Dolphins are simply out of the question.
New York Jets – The Jets have already thrown around the notion of going after Bears WR Bernard Berrian, but if they had a shot to get Moss, why wouldn’t they?
