It appears that despite a breakout season in which he rushed for over 1,000 yards and four TD’s, the Raiders are going to let running back Justin Fargas hit the open market and will not give him the world to come back to the Silver and Black. Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee has written in his blog that keeping Fargas may not be on the Raiders radar if they go out and grab Arkansas running back Darren McFadden in April’s NFL Draft.
Jones says that McFadden is popular with Raiders fans and think that he’ll come in and be the next Bo Jackson. Raiders coach (for now) Lane Kiffin has said he wants Fargas back, as the he showed that he can be a feature back and he really showed up out of nowhere for a team that had LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes expected to carry the load in the backfield in 2007. But it was Fargas that burst on the scene, making people forget that the team also even drafted Michael Bush, who was hurt the whole season and never played.
If Fargas goes, and my guess he will get a solid offer from some team that needs a back and he will leave the Raiders, look for Bush to get his shot at the position in 2008, unless that is the team does go out and draft a running back high in the draft. It will take some doing to get McFadden if that is the direction the team wants to try to go in, as he will be in the top five and the team will have to trade up to get him. Look for Bush, Jordan (who asked for his release) and Rhodes (who missed the first four games after being suspended) to be all in the mix in 2008.
