Could the 49’ers-Rams rivalry of two bad teams get a boost now that Mike Martz will be in San Fran coaching the Niners offense against his former team twice a season? That very well could be the case, as Martz has never really gotten over being let go as head coach of the Rams after leading them to the Super Bowl despite losing to the Pats on a last-play field goal that truly started New England’s dynasty.
It will be interesting to see how Martz coaches the Niners offense against other teams and then if he turns up the heat and tries to do in the Rams. As stated here upon his hiring, the Niners offense has plenty of work that needs to be done, as this past season they were worst in the league in most offense stats. It was interesting to hear comments already that Martz, a pass happy guy, is going to try and base the offense around stud back Frank Gore.
Another thing to watch out for is what type of players in the draft and free agency Martz asks the team to go after to set up the offense. There is a theory that one player the team would love to target is Rams wide out Issac Bruce. The long-time wide out from the Rams is due a $2 million roster bonus from the team, and many think that the Rams will simply release Bruce then rather pay him the money.
The Belleville News-Democrat states that there is no way that the Niners would not take a hard look at the 36-year-old receiver, who would upgrade the position and could even be a starter right away for San Fran. However it plays out, it will be interesting to see what antics are played up even more now between the Niners and Rams as they take the field twice a year.
