As we continue to look at the situation concerning the Ravens and their next head coach, the name that has popped up that is very much of great interest is former Steelers coach Bill Cowher. Today’s Baltimore Sun says that the Ravens are going to make a hard run at Cowher, which will include a meeting this weekend. Cowher is doing TV with CBS, and seems happy doing it, but there is no doubt that down the road, this year or maybe 2-3 years, Cowher will be on a sideline somwhere.
Cowher also has a great deal of knowledge about the AFC North, as he is just one season removed from being the Steelers head coach. What better way to get back in the race in the North but to have someone that knows the division inside and out? Cowher also is not afraid to come in and make changes, as back in 1992 when he joined the Steelers he right away got rid of some of the dead weight from the team, inlcuding a number one draft pick from just two years before that was drafted by Chuck Noll (Huey Richardson).
So while Jason Garrett seems to still be the hot name out there, along with guys like Josh McDainels and possibly Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell, Cowher would be the biggest name that could come in today and make a huge impact for a Ravens team that needs to retool as it gets ready to head into a long offseason. Cowher, like Brian Billick was, is a solid players coach that can relate to this team, and it would be interesting to see how he would motivate a team that seems to feed on emotion.
