Christmas may be officially over, but for the team in New York that wears green, their wish list may not get filled till free agency starts shortly after the Super Bowl. The Jets will not be in the playoffs in 2007, and there will be plenty of change in the offseason for the Jets, who won 10 games a year ago only to take a huge step back this season. The New York Daily News reports today there are a few players that the team is going to try and lure to the Big Apple.
The team has plenty of money to spend this offseason, as the report says they are going to be a whopping $28 mil in the hole to be able to spend on draft choices as well as free agents. Plus they have a couple of players they can use as bait to create even more room under the cap, including QB Chad Pennington and linebacker Jonathan Vilma. So what players do the Jets have their sights set on? Here’s the list according to the report in the Daily News.
Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs – The linebacker wanted a mega-deal from the Ravens prior to the season, but didn’t get it. The Jets need some more playmakers on defense, and with Vilma a player that could be gone, Suggs could get a shot to be the type of defensive player the Jets need.
Titans DT Albert Haynesworth – This will be the most talked about defensive player when it comes to free agency, so it’s no surprise his name’s on the list. Just look at the impact he’s made in 2007 when he plays for the Titans, and when he doesn’t. Haynesworth would upgrade a D-line that needs to be more consistent in stopping the run and putting pressure on the opposing QB’s.
Bears WR Bernard Berrian – The team would like to upgrade that position, and Berrian is a player that can make it happen. He has game-breaking speed, and while he’s been known to drop some passes, he’s a player that Jets would be more than happy to take a flyer on a player that can stretch the offense and make some big plays for a team that lacks in that department.
