NFL Winners and Losers – Week 16

Portis leading the Skins to a playoff birth

One more week (and one game tonight) is all that is keeping us from the final 12 in the National Football League. Yes, the playoffs are closing in, and with it we have some teams that had their own hands around their necks on Sunday, while other teams took advantage of it. With that, here are our winners and losers for week 16.

Winners

————–

The Titans & Redskins – Easy one here, as these two teams put themselves in a great position for the final week of the regular season – win and your in. Now they could get in still with some help if they lose, but after coming up big and getting help Sunday, this is the position you want to be in. Plus, both teams will play teams (Indy and Dallas) that will be sitting plenty of starters, so there’s no reason for them to lose.

Losers

————-

The Browns and Vikings – Both these teams played as tight as could be, and both now might as well book New Year’s plans. The Browns had the misfortune of QB Derek Anderson having his worst game of the season in Cincy, throwing four picks in a 19-14 loss. As for the Vikings, their defense forgot to show up, and in front of a great home crowd, they let Washington run all over them to lose control of the last wild card spot in the NFC.

Winners

————–

The Bears Defense – Let’s give some props today to this proud unit, as they showed up Sunday and did what really no one has done in the 2007 season – stop the Packers offense. They held Brett Favre to 9 yards passing in the first half, and then got two picks in the second half, one for a score, to put the game away 35-7. The way they played Sunday should give Bears fans some hope for 2008.

Losers

————

Warren Sapp – The overrated, aging Sapp decided near the end of an absolute thrashing at the hands of the Jags to start mouthing at the refs and get ejected to get to the shower first. The Raiders, still the same old Raiders, got four unsportsmanlike penalties in a row, proving once again you can dress up a pig, but in the end, it’s still a pig. Despite getting better, this team still has a long way to go.

Winner

————

Kevin Everett – How could you not get a bit taken back when seeing Everett, who many thought would never walk again, take the field at Ralph Wilson Stadium Sunday to root on his Bills? The tight end, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury in week one, came to the stadium and gave a pregame speech to the team before they played the Giants. Sure the Bills lost, but it’s about so much more than that.

Losers

————–

The Saints defense – I realize they have had a tough up and down season, but they had a great shot Sunday to further their chance at a playoff birth, and instead allowed the Eagles to run it up on them in a 38-23 loss. Philly, which is not exactly a team that scores all that much, put up close to 40, had 435 yards of offense, and went 8-of-13 on third down conversions. The Saints today are just lucky to be in the playoff race at all.
