It looks like StubHub will have some competition in the NFL ticket resale market: none other than Ticketmaster. The Associated Press is reporting that Ticketmaster plans to launch a website next year that will enable people to resell NFL game tickets; this would be Ticketmaster’s push into the lucrative secondary ticket market.
The company has signed a multi-year deal with the NFL which includes branding and promotion for the site; the financial terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed as of yet. As it is, Ticketmaster already operates separate, “ticket-exchange” sites for 18 NFL teams that allow people to resell unused NFL game tickets. The deal between Ticketmaster and the NFL will move those 18 teams and add 4 more to the new web portal, which is set to debut sometime next year.
Ticketmaster plans to “guarantee” the resold tickets, which are sent to buyers electronically, just as it already does with its regular primary ticket sales. Ticketmaster is hoping that this security feature (the guarantee) plus NFL branding will reel in prospective ticket buyers and sellers.
