After the signings of Vinny Testaverde and Zack Crockett by the Panthers and Bucs respectively one could easily ask themselves that question. Testaverde soon to be 44 years old was signed to take the roster spot of Jake Delhomme on Wednesday. Now don’t get me wrong Vinny may be a serviceable back up and looks like he may start Sunday for Carolina but weren’t there some other choices? Choices such as Todd Bouman, Aaron Brooks, Chris Weinke or even Jared Zabransky? What about the retired Drew Bledsoe he’s as mobile as Vinny and his stats are much better. Testaverde has 270 TD’s and 261 picks Bledsoe 251 and 206. Now before you throw a brick at your monitor these guys minus Zabransky have been around the league, are younger than Testaverde and in the case of Weinke he played in the system. Bouman has played in 26 games and has 11 TD’s and 11 picks. Brooks has 93 Games under his belt with 123 TD’s and 92 picks. My choice here if you can’t lure Bledsoe out of retirement you go for Aaron Brooks.
Now turning our attention to Zack Crockett and the Bucs. Yes he has a history with Chuckie, but we are talking about a guy who hasn’t carried the ball more than 95 times in a season or rushed for over 300 yards. Both of those numbers were highs in his career and that was ten years ago with the Colts. I don’t even know if I would call Crockett serviceable right now but some other choices that would have made sense to me are Kevan Barlow, Stephen Davis, Tony Fisher, Verron Haynes, Wali Lundy, Shaud Williams or even a rookie like Greg Pruitt Jr. Barlow and Davis have rushed for over 1,000 yards and Davis has done it four times in his career. My choice here would be Kevan Barlow with Shaud Williams being my second choice.
Not only has the NFL become the “No Fun League” it has become the in the hell are they thinking league.
